Submission Guidelines for the Academic Imprint

ACTS Press welcomes proposals for original studies and translations.

Prospective authors are asked to submit their proposal to ACTS Press by contacting us. ACTS Press does not accept manuscripts that have been previously published in any print or electronic format, that will appear elsewhere, or whose substance has appeared or will appear elsewhere, whether in English or in another language. The only exception is to projects which are explicitly presented as a translation of a previous scholarly work in another language.

In the submission, include your complete contact information and institutional affiliation (if any). If the work is by multiple authors or editors, include the contact information for all parties involved. The submission needs to introduce the project, discuss its significance, and position it within the current historiography and publications. Also provide an anticipated date of completion of the manuscript, and an overall wordcount (including the bibliography). In this initial communication, include as an appendix: an abstract of the work (not to exceed 300 words); a detailed table of contents; a short description or summary for each chapter in the work. At this initial stage, the book proposal may be submitted to multiple presses. 

 After an initial review, the Press may request a portion or the whole of the manuscript. At this stage, the proposal and submission need to be exclusive to ACTS Press. If asked to submit your manuscript, in part or whole, the text submitted needs to abide by the following guidelines:

• Needs to be in a single PDF file (excluding images; see below).

• The text should be double-spaced and utilizes Unicode fonts throughout.

• All files in the manuscript need to be consecutively numbered in “Arabic” numerals.

• The text may not contain any references to the author(s) and/or editor(s) of the work. All cited works should be referenced in the third person. Do not include personal notes, acknowledgments, dedication, references to oral presentation, or the like. Those may be added later.

• If the manuscript includes images, artwork, graphs and/or figures, submit these in a separate PDF attachment along with your manuscript. Include the captions for the images below them or at the end of that fill.

• This submission does not need to conform to the Press’s stylesheet, but if accepted for publication, it will be the author’s responsibility to make all necessary changes to their manuscript to conform with the Press’s guidelines.

• After the title page, include an abstract of the work (this may be the same abstract submitted with the proposal letter).

The period of review may take up to three months, at the end of which the author(s) will receive a copy of the peer-reviews of the work and the Press’s recommendation. The Press may or may not choose to continue with the project at that point. Various alterations, based on the peer-review assessments, may be asked of the author at this stage as well.

It is the author(s) responsibility to obtain any necessary permissions for extensive quotations, tables, illustrations, images, or any other copyrighted material, and to present that to the Press.

Upon acceptance of the work for publication, the final manuscript submitted to ACTS Press needs to be in MS Word or a MS Word-compatible format (e.g., doc; docx; rtf). 

ACTS Press requires the assignment of copyright to the Press on acceptance of the manuscript for publication.

ACTS Press will consider publishing English translations of important studies on the topics it prioritizes. Authors considering an English translation of a relevant work should contact the Press in advance . If the Press chooses to pursue the project, the translator will be responsible for obtaining copyright permissions from the holder(s) of the original publication. And if asked to submit a portion of the work for review, they will we asked to submit a detailed English summary of the work in English, along with a sample of the proposed English translation (no less than 3,000 words), and a copy of the original text the translation is based upon.
